Newsflash! Facet Injections: Anesthesia’s Unpaid Performance

This is an important update for all Anesthesia providers.

Medicare has introduced significant changes in the coverage of anesthesia for facet injections. Several contractors, including WPS, Noridian, Palmetto, CGS, and NGC, will no longer reimburse for anesthesia in conjunction with facet joint injections. This includes moderate or deep sedation, general anesthesia, and monitored anesthesia care (MAC). Anesthesia is now considered “not medically reasonable and necessary during facet injections.”

Impact to you

Anesthesia services provided for facet injections will no longer be reimbursed based on the policy updates.
