The year 2025 has brought significant changes to the pain management coding world. With the addition of CPT codes 64466-64469 and 64473-64474, providers now have distinct codes for billing thoracic fascial plane and lower extremity fascial plane services. As with most CPT codes, CMS has assigned an NCCI Medically Unlikely Edit (MUE) value to these codes as of April 2025. An MUE represents the maximum units of service reported for a HCPCS/CPT code on the majority of appropriately reported claims by the same provider/supplier for the same beneficiary on the same date of service.
CPT Codes | MUE Value | MUE Adjudication Indicator | Impact |
64466-64469 | 1 | 2 | These codes can only be billed once per day, per patient. |
64473-64474 | 1 | 3 | CMS will automatically deny any claim billed with one of these CPT codes in excess of 1. Medicare will consider an appeal with appropriate documentation. |
