Emergency physicians have historically utilized three primary patient disposition options: discharge home, inpatient admission, or facility observation.  However, there’s much discussion over the gray area amongst these three options—patients who cannot be safely discharged after initial ED evaluation but who are unlikely to be best served by lengthy inpatient stays.
